CAPTAINS

1914 – K. Muttiah (alias Fr. K. Aloysius Mary. A capable captain who keeps his men together and sets a good example to his side by his energy and skilful play. (Annual 1914)

1915 – T. Thambirajah and E. R. Daniel.

1918 – H. J. J. Estogupillai. An ideal player; he has infected all the members of his team with his enthusiasm. He has succeeded in instilling “team spirit”.(Annual 1919)

1920 – J. L. Balthazaar and A. Ambalavanar. “ Our match against St. Joseph’s Trinco ended in a draw but would have been a victory for us by at least three goals but for the plucky fight put up by our opponents and especially their broad limbed brilliant goal – keeper who was simply impenetrable”

1922 – Pat Barthelot and A. Delima. These two stalwarts lead one of the best teams in the history of St. Michael’s. They drew with the powerful police team led by Mr. J. M. Rennie, C.C.S. and beat the old boys led by Fr. Aloysius Mary s.j., Patrick david, P. Aloysius and Thuraiappah.

1923 – N. S. Alagiah and E. Fernandez.” We played five matches with the local government servants captained by Mr. J. M. Rennie and one with Old boys captained by Mr. A. Canagasingham(later Capt.) Won 1, lost 2 and drew 3”

1924 – E. Fernandez (from Kerala) and E. Thambipillai.”everyone coming into the chapel broke his customary modesty to get a sight of Fr. Theophilus Gopal who became our prefect of games and did much for volley ball as well as football and started ‘paddle tennis’, a hybrid of Lawn Tennis and Table Tennis. It was the training ground of future Tennis champions.”

1926 – S. M. Sebastian and T. Murugupillai. “ We played against Mr. K. W. Devanayagam’s team from Chenkalady and won 6 – 0. They were out of form. Our prominent center forward Mr. P. Barthelot, the resourceful M. A. Sebamalai on the right and the redoubtable A. B. Brathelot on the left made a splendid trio.”

1927 – A. B. Barthelot and M. A. Sebastian. Fr. Aloysius Mary, a highly famed forward, is our coach. We beat St. Joseph’s, Trinco who had come on a tour.

            After this there is a gap in the records, as the Annual had gone out of publication. There were the usual hard fought matches with Central College but details are not available except of one memorable match in 1947 played on a water logged field in pouring rain when all the spectators had fled to the Post Office except three supporters of St. Michael’s. Central who had a much better team were foiled by the weather conditions and had to concede a draw. 

1949 – B. M. Ockersz and D. Jayasiri.

1950 – B. M. Ockersz and A. Michael. B. M. Ockersz one of the fastest forwards in the history of the College. A. Michael was unequalled in his ability to head the ball at centre half.

1951 – V. Simon cap. C. Ockersz sub. Cap. Fr. L. Lorio coach. S. Andreas goalie.

1952 – Rex Ockersz, one of the great full backs played with noble and Bertram Johnpillai in a champion team.

1955 – C. J. Julian capt. A. Mary Vice Capt. Br. Richard coach. One of the all time great teams who swept all before them to become Eastern Province champions.

1960 – H. Nizam capt. Coach Fr. Vincent Gnanapragasam. S.j., Eastern Province champions again. Nizam is one of the truly fine all rounder athletics of St. Michael’s.

1962 -C. Krishnachandra and N. Hendrick. Winners of the B.D.A.cup. I. T. Canagaretnam cup and Eastern Province Champion. Coach Fr. Gnanapragasam.

1963 – C. S. Pietersz. Eastern province champions. Coach Fr. Webber.

1965 – K. S. Jeyarajah capt. S. Andreas coach. Another fine team that was led by Jeyarajah and his brother Anandarajah to the Eastern Province championship. J. N. C. Barthelot was the fine forward who scored a hatrick against St. Joseph’s, Trinco.

1967 – K. Anandarajah capt. S. Andreas coach. Desmond Nadarajah full back was a tower of strength and with Anandarajah at centre half was almost unscored against.

1970 – T. Hajireen capt. S. Andreas coach. Tuan, the little brother of Nizam, led the college to another undefeated year.

1971 – A. John capt. Mr.P. Puvirajasingam coach. District champions.

1972 – S. Thayaparan. We had a good year with small boys, the rest having passed out before they were even seventeen. We lost to Shivananda in the final.

1973 – Nivaraj Canagasuriam. E beat Shivananda in the finals – Underr 17 group
